Dad and Sheri took Uncle Jimmie and I took the Sandler Center for Performing Arts for a Chris Botti show.  I had never heard of him before but Wow.  He was incredible.

This morning I shared a presentation on Mali with 83 third-graders at Parkway Elementary where a friend of my step-mom's teaches.  I wish I could present on Mali everyday to such an engaging and informed audience (3rd graders in VA study ancient Mali so they knew about the Niger river and some other tidbits - one of the kids even knew that Mali means hippo!!).

Mali is always on my mind.  Things are not looking good even though ECOWAS struck a deal with Sanogo for Dioncounda to stay in power.  I'm keeping glued to Reuter's updates and twitter feeds - the news changes too quickly to post on my blog about it so those are the best sources.

Last night Dad and Sheri took me along with them to see Martin Short at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.  What a treat!  We had dinner before the show at Havana Nights Jazz & Cigar Club
and went back for dessert and a little jazz music afterwards!

On January 8th, Memaw invited Mom and I to see the King & I - also at the Sandler Center.  I did not know so many of the songs I had heard while growing up like 'Getting to Know You' and 'Shall We Dance' had come from this production!  While the end of the piece left me a little uncomfortable (the whole 'westernizing' the Siamese people...) - spending time with Memaw & Mom is precisely my cup of tea!
